  • Particle board (also styled as one word: particleboard) is an engineered-wood product made from fine wood particles mixed with resin and pressed into large sheets. Sometimes called chipboard, particle board is technically a type of fiberboard, a family that includes hardboard and medium-density fiberboard (MDF). Depending on the resin used in manufacturing, particle board may be more or less water resistant. Particle board is commonly used as subflooring and as a substrate for plastic laminate, melamine or wood veneer in the manufacture of cabinets, countertops, and furniture. Key specification criteria for particle board include: sheet size, sheet thickness, specialty products and recommended uses.
