  • Master Lock Co., the quintessence of Milwaukee's metalworker heritage and proud maker of 90% of America's padlocks, is latching onto the digital economy.The 86-year-old company, which still punches out steel locks on the city's west side as well as in Mexico, rolled out its latest product announcement this week: a fingerprint-activated biometric garage-door opening system that dispenses with keys or keypads.The company didn't develop the fingerprint sensors itself, which come from Long Island, N.Y.-based bioMETRX Inc. But Master Lock, describing what amounts to a new branding strategy, says it is happy to lend its reputation for "reliability and security and strength," said Steve Hedlund, the company's vice president of growth and innovation.

  • Mar. 16--Before the old Meriter Hospital on West Washington Avenue was torn down so the Alexander Co.'s Capitol West mixed-use project could begin, Christi Weber and Dave Waisman were called in to see what could be reused or recycled, and devise a plan to make that happen. The pair, which works for the Madison Environmental Group, took 250 doors from the building for use as raw material for the group's new business, Fullcircle Furniture, launched in November at the company's headquarters on Capitol Square. Weber, 29, designed furniture that made use of the solid-core birch flat-panel doors.
