  • Like most pros, Chris Folk knows the bathroom is a breeding ground for callbacks."One of the biggest problems we have is humidity," says Folk, owner of Evans Coghill Homes in Charlotte, N.C. If builders don't install bath fans that effectively remove humidity, mold or mildew could form, he says. However, if a fan is noisy, the homeowner is less likely to turn it on or leave it on for the proper amount of time. (The Home Ventilating Institute recommends that fans be left on for at least 20 minutes after showering.) Meanwhile, some "people won't turn them on because if they leave the room they'll forget it and it'll run all day," says Jim Barrett, senior vice president of marketing for Hunter Fans.

  • Broan-NuTone. A new weapon has been forged to join the ongoing battle against indoor humidity and the mold it breeds. Ultra Silent humidity-sensing fans are designed to detect a rapid increase in moisture at the ceiling and turn on automatically to exhaust it. They also turn off automatically. Homeowners can set the humidity-sensing level and how long the fan runs--from 5 to 60 minutes--after the humidity level is back to normal. "The sensitivity controls are a nice feature," one judge said. The fans operate at a respectably quiet noise level of .9 sones. Two models come with nightlights. Cost: $312 and up. 800-558-1711.

  • Broan-NuTone. With special wireless controllers connected to UltraSilent fans, the SmartSense Intelligent Ventilation System automates improvements in indoor air quality. Available in two-and three-fan kits, the system uses formulas based on home size and number of bedrooms to calculate a home's necessary ventilation. A master control monitors and deducts manual fan usage, such as during showering, from ventilation requirements and directs other fans in the system to activate as necessary to achieve optimal air quality. 800.558.1711.
