Dow Announces New Technology for STYROFOAM Insulation

- Dow Building Solutions announced today that it has developed a next-generation foaming agent technology that will allow it to manufacture STYROFOAM R5/inch insulation with a zero ozone-depletion factor and cut its greenhouse gas emissions in half for North America. The proprietary formulation substitutes the hydrochloro-fluorocarbon (HCFC) 142b, an ozone-depleting compound that US and Canadian regulations under the Montreal Protocol require be phased out by January 1, 2010 in North America, with a non-ozone depleting compound.

GreenGuard PLYGOOD-Ultra sheathing provides insulation R-value of 2.0 in 7/16" thickness and a 1.5 R-value in 3/8" thickness, both of which are substantially higher than wood-based sheathing of the same dimensions. To accommodate regions where code requirements have limited the use of rigid foam in foundation applications because of the potential for termite damage, Dow has developed Styrofoam Blueguard extruded foam insulation, which incorporates Preventol HS100 insecticide into its foam matrix. Styrofoam Blueguard can be used in areas with very heavy termite infestation in below-grade applications, the company says.
