  • Softwood-veneer plywood: Engineered wood panels for construction applications
  • ebuild (4/19/2007)
  • Among many uses, softwood-veneer plywood is commonly used for subfloors, and wall and roof sheathing. It's often used in place of oriented-strand board (OSB). A standard sheet of softwood plywood measures 4 by 8 feet, and is available in a wide variety of thicknesses ranging from ¼- to 1-7/16 inches. Plywood panels offer many variants in grades and ratings. Stamps on plywood panels offer information about whether the panel is rated for interior or exterior applications, face quality, strength and other important characteristics.
  • Hardwood-veneer plywood: ash, cherry, birch, mahogany, oak and exotic species
  • ebuild (4/18/2007)
  • Hardwood-veneer plywood is similar to softwood plywood: wood layers (plies) are laminated together and then covered with front and back face veneers. But because hardwood veneer plywood-with face veneers cut from deciduous species such as ash, birch, cherry, mahogany and oak-is used for cabinets, doors, bookcases, furniture, paneling, wall units and the like, its appearance is generally more critical. Specifications like the grade of the panel face and back, veneer cut and core type must be considered along with panel width, length and thickness.
