  • Decay Resistance of Pf-Pyrolytic Oil Resin-Treated Wood
  • Forest Products Journal (5/1/2007)
  • Abstract Sapwood blocks of white pine and American beech were impregnated in a two-step treatment with either a 5 percent copper chloride solution or a mixture of 5 percent copper chloride and 2 percent sodium borate followed by impregnation with a phenol- formaldehyde resin containing various concentrations of a softwood- bark-derived pyrolytic oil. The treated and control wood samples were subjected to a soil block test according to AWPA Standard E10- 91. After exposure of wood samples to three decay fungi for 16 weeks, control samples of white pine lost, in average, 62.9 percent, 35.2 percent and 31.7 percent of their dry weights caused by Postia placenta, Gloeophyllum trabeum and Irpex lacteus respectively, whereas the control samples of American beech lost 57.8 percent, 49.0 percent and 62.3 percent of their weights caused by these three fungi.
