- Softwood-veneer plywood: Engineered wood panels for construction applications
- ebuild (4/19/2007)
- Among many uses, softwood-veneer plywood is commonly used for subfloors, and wall and roof sheathing. It's often used in place of oriented-strand board (OSB). A standard sheet of softwood plywood measures 4 by 8 feet, and is available in a wide variety of thicknesses ranging from ¼- to 1-7/16 inches. Plywood panels offer many variants in grades and ratings. Stamps on plywood panels offer information about whether the panel is rated for interior or exterior applications, face quality, strength and other important characteristics.
- Five Green Fixes for Your Home
- Business Week (4/19/2007)
- With apologies to Kermit the Frog, these days it seems like it's easy--but pricey--being green. In theory, at least, a more energy-efficient car or warming the boiler with the power of the sun will eventually save users money on conventional energy costs, which can shoot higher rather quickly. A green remodeling might include a luxurious stone countertop to wow the Joneses but the real savings will come from features the Joneses probably won't notice unless you point them out.
- Hardwood-veneer plywood: ash, cherry, birch, mahogany, oak and exotic species
- ebuild (4/18/2007)
- Hardwood-veneer plywood is similar to softwood plywood: wood layers (plies) are laminated together and then covered with front and back face veneers. But because hardwood veneer plywood-with face veneers cut from deciduous species such as ash, birch, cherry, mahogany and oak-is used for cabinets, doors, bookcases, furniture, paneling, wall units and the like, its appearance is generally more critical. Specifications like the grade of the panel face and back, veneer cut and core type must be considered along with panel width, length and thickness.

- Particle board: Review specs for the lowest-cost engineered wood panels
- ebuild (4/17/2007)
- Particle board (also styled as one word: particleboard) is an engineered-wood product made from fine wood particles mixed with resin and pressed into large sheets. Sometimes called chipboard, particle board is technically a type of fiberboard, a family that includes hardboard and medium-density fiberboard (MDF). Depending on the resin used in manufacturing, particle board may be more or less water resistant. Particle board is commonly used as subflooring and as a substrate for plastic laminate, melamine or wood veneer in the manufacture of cabinets, countertops, and furniture. Key specification criteria for particle board include: sheet size, sheet thickness, specialty products and recommended uses.

- Law Doesn't Distinguish Between Modular, Site-Built Homes
- High Point Enterprise (4/16/2007)
- Apr. 16--HIGH POINT -- Neighbors routinely, and mistakenly, refer to the modular homes waiting to be assembled on Whites Mill Road as "manufactured" or "mobile" homes. There's a big difference, according to Lee Burnette, city planning director. The homes on Whites Mill are inspected by the city, but will be built and assembled according to the state building code.
