- Toyota Motor took another step Tuesday in its quest to go from foreigner to naturalized American.The big Japanese automaker, poised to become the biggest car company in the world this year, said it will build a $1.3 billion manufacturing plant near Tupelo, Miss., that will build 150,000 Highlander crossover utility vehicles annually when it opens in 2010.That will bring to eight the number of Toyota's North American plants, capable of manufacturing 2.2 million vehicles a year, equivalent to 86% of the cars and trucks Toyota sold in the USA last year.

- Feb. 24--Foreign automakers are primed to start selling cars in the United States that produce less carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide and get 20 to 40 percent better mileage than vehicles already on the market. And they do it by efficiently burning a cleaner type of diesel fuel. In some states -- including Massachusetts -- new models have been banned for years because their exhaust systems were inefficient and diesel fuel contained too much sulfur to meet emissions standards.

- Sales of sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks fell for a second straight year in the Milwaukee area, as high gasoline prices drove some vehicle buyers to cars from light trucks.Light-vehicle sales fell 4% in the Milwaukee region, according to data provided by Reg-Trak Inc. That included a 10% drop in truck sales, offset by a 1% gain in car sales.High gas prices last year played a role, as Milwaukee's sales reflected a national trend in consumer shifts away from larger, less fuel-efficient cars, said Don Hansen, president of the Automobile Dealers Association of Mega Milwaukee Inc.

- General Motors Corp., the world's largest automaker, stands a 50 percent chance of buying DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler unit and may seek the purchase as a "defensive maneuver," Merrill Lynch analyst John Murphy said.GM and DaimlerChrysler are discussing options including a sale of the unprofitable Chrysler division, people with knowledge of the talks said Feb. 16.DaimlerChrysler said on Feb. 14 it was exploring "all options" for the Auburn Hills, Mich.-based unit after Chrysler posted a $1.5 billion loss for last year.

The world's largest automaker is set to expand further, as General Motors Corp. is negotiating to buy the struggling Chrysler division from its German parent, DaimlerChrysler AG, sources with knowledge of the talks said. "We're not going to comment on speculations concerning [any] discussions between [DaimlerChrysler] and GM," GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson said yesterday.

- SHANGHAI, China -- Dodge will join Chevrolet and other mainstream American brands being sold in China when sales begin sometime this year, DaimlerChrysler AG announced today.Chrysler Group (China) Sales Ltd. is preparing a dealership network to sell Dodge cars throughout China, DaimlerChrysler said in a statement. The company said it also plans to launch another Chrysler vehicle and three new Jeep models in China this year.

- WASHINGTON - Two dozen 2007 passenger vehicles received top scores in government crash ratings Tuesday under a system that is expected to be revised to offer more meaningful information for car buyers.The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said 17 sport utility vehicles received five stars in front-end and side-impact testing: the Acura MDX and RDX; Audi Q7; Dodge Nitro; Ford Freestyle; GMC Acadia; Honda CR-V and Element; Hyundai Santa Fe; Infiniti FX35/45; Jeep Grand Cherokee; Kia Sorento and Sportage; Mazda CX-7; Saturn Outlook; Subaru Outback and Toyota Highlander.The test results are frequently cited in advertising, but the government's watchdog group and others have said the "star system" needs to be improved because most vehicles receive four or five stars under NHTSA's system.
