Analysts and the media were working on GM's obituary after sagging sales in 2005 and the company's seeming dependence on gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs. But President Bush's call to reduce gasoline consumption partly through the introduction of greener cars and trucks got cautiously positive reaction from Detroit on Wednesday. "This is one of those times the industry got caught doing something right," said Gloria Bergquist, vice president of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.

- Drivers and passengers in pickup trucks, SUVs and other vehicles with Indiana truck plates would no longer be exempt from the state's seat-belt law under a bill endorsed by a House committee on Wednesday.It next goes to the House Ways and Means Committee for consideration of possible amendmentsthat would change how money from truck-plate registrations is distributed for road construction and repairs.But the law exempts occupants 16 and older in pickups and other truck- plated vehicles, including SUVs and minivans, from having to buckle up.

- WASHINGTON - Daimler-Chrysler AG said Tuesday that it would be the first to market with a diesel heavy-duty pickup capable of meeting strict 2010 emissions standards in all 50 states."When you think of the Dodge Ram heavy duty pickup truck, you usually think of power, lots of torque and the ability to carry a big payload," said Tom LaSorda, the chief executive of Daimler- Chrysler's Chrysler Group.He said the vehicle would be "the cleanest pickup truck in the marketplace."

- I'm normally a veggie-burger type of guy, but after driving the new '07 Chevy Silverado pickup truck for a few miles, I pulled into a Burger King (BKC) and did something I hadn't done in years: chowed down on a Double Whopper. General Motors (GM) pulled out all the stops to make its new flagship pickup truck a winner with everyone from weekenders and suburban dads to plumbers, building contractors, and other traditional truck owners. The company is ramping up a marketing and public relations push to counter the noise being made in advance of the opening of Toyota's new San Antonio plant, which will build 200,000 of its new Tundra pickups a year starting next month.To make the point that Texas is a vital market, Ford Chairman and family scion William C.
