- Toyota Motor Corp., which boasted one of the best recall records among major automakers in the U.S. last year after a troubled 2005, is starting the new year with a potential black eye.The company's U.S. sales arm said Thursday that it was launching a safety recall of 553,000 full-size Tundra pickups and Sequoia sport utility vehicles to replace a key part of the front steering system.Toyota spokesman Bill Kwong said the part, a ball joint that enables the front wheels to turn, was made by an outside supplier.

Just about every company on hand had something to brag about. Some of the most practical and useful new technology came from Ford Motor Co. Its 2008 Focus will allow users to access a phone or digital music player -- including even information such as song title, artist and type of music -- via voice commands using a new technology called Sync, a joint venture of Ford and Microsoft.

- Honda Chief Executive Officer Takeo Fukui says that hybrid systems are the better choice for small cars, but larger cars and sport-utility vehicles may be better suited for diesel. In an interview at Detroit's North American International Auto Show, Fukui told BusinessWeek.com through an interpreter that starting in three years, Honda will begin to roll out diesel engines, and they will probably be employed in its larger vehicles. In fact, he says Honda has not yet decided whether the next-generation Accord family sedan will get a hybrid system when it hits the market late this year.

- Toyota is betting big with Tundra.The first-generation Tundra was introduced in the 2000 model year replacing the comparatively diminutive Japan-built T-100 pickup. The all-new Tundra began rolling off the San Antonio assembly line last November.
- Honda Engineers One Solid Pickup in 2007 Ridgeline

- The Honda Ridgeline tosses aside many of the traditional guidelines used in building a pickup. Perhaps most significantly, instead of bolting separate passenger and cargo modules to a frame, the Ridgeline is one solid piece, bumper to bumper, affixed to a ladder-type frame. According to Honda, the Ridgeline boasts as much interior space as a four-door Ford F-150 and it can tow 5,000 pounds with its 255- horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and five-speed automatic transmission.
