  • Are Toyota Motor and Ford Motor working toward negotiations that could, eventually, lead to some kind of partnership between the two auto giants?That question was sparked this morning by a report in the online version of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, a Japanese business daily, of high-level meetings between Ford's Chief Executive Officer Alan Mulally and Toyota's Chairman Fujio Cho.Unnamed sources in the report cited Ford's interest in Toyota's hybrid and fuel-cell powertrains, as well as the company's legendarily lean manufacturing processes.

  • DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group will unveil a restructuring plan that includes job cuts and plant closures when it releases its 2006 earnings in February, a company official said Friday. The official, who did not want to be identified because he is not authorized to speak about the plan, said the restructuring won't be as drastic as in 2001, when Chrysler shed 40,000 employees with layoffs and the sale of component plants. Company spokesman Jason Vines would not comment on the plan, details of which were reported by The Detroit News on Friday.

  • DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group on Wednesday launched production of the 2007 Jeep Patriot compact SUV, one of the new products it is counting on to boost sluggish sales.The Jeep Patriot is the company's 10th all-new vehicle this year and the third introduced at the Belvidere assembly plant, following the Dodge Caliber hatchback and the Jeep Compass crossover.It comes as Chrysler sales are down from 2005 and inventories of unsold pickups and sport utility vehicles are high.
