  • Nissan North America is launching a 413,000-square-foot parts distribution center in southeast Shelby county, a move that culminates two years of negotiations.The Japanese-based company, whose North American headquarters were recently relocated to Nashville, signed a lease at Lauth Property Group's Delta Point Business Center, a 127-acre business park just south of Holmes and Getwell.It is unclear how many jobs will be created or when the distribution center will become operational, but local economic development and real estate officials said landing the Nissan distribution center was a coup for the city and Lauth.

Existing fuel economy numbers - 60 mpg for a Prius and 49 mpg for a Honda Civic hybrid, for example - were computed using 30-year-old tests that simulated a leisurely drive at up to 60 mph in 75-degree weather. For example, Prius numbers could be revised downward from 60 mpg to 42 mpg for highway driving.

  • That 55-miles-per-gallon hybrid car you've been eyeing might end up being a 44 mpg car if you wait for the 2008 model.The federal Environmental Protection Agency announced a new system Monday for evaluating fuel economy that will lower mileage estimates for most vehicles.On average, vehicles rated under the 2008 method will post a 12 percent drop in city-driving mileage and an 8 percent decline in highway mileage, said Bill Wehrum, the EPA's acting assistant administrator for air and radiation.

  • TOKYO -- Nissan Motor Co. announced plans Monday to launch a next-generation fuel cell vehicle in the early 2010s in Japan and North America as part of its mid-term environmental strategy.Nissan Chief Operating Officer Toshiyuki Shiga said at a Tokyo press conference outlining the company's "Nissan Green Program 2010" that, beginning in fiscal year 2010, it will introduce gasoline engine technologies that will both enhance fuel economy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions to the equivalent to diesel engine levels.The company aims to introduce a new fuel-cell vehicle using an improved fuel stack -- the main part of such vehicles -- developed in-house after 2010 that will offer performance on par with gasoline-power automobiles, Shiga said.
