When my wife and I installed our vinyl replacement windows, we filled the spaces under the expanders with strips of fiberglass insulation cut from a piece of water-heater insulation.We also pulled off tufts of fiberglass from the blanket and stuffed them into any small gaps at the sides of the windows.

Greensburg, Kan., cooperative rebuilds after the storm, prepares for harvest

- The community of Greensburg, Kan., continues to clear the debris left by the turbulent tornado that leveled most of the town in May, as the process of rebuilding begins. Agricultural production fuels much of Greensburg's economy. Jodi Viers, our local Pella representative, was on site within a few days after the storm. Once the storm passed, Viers, of Dodge, City, Kan., alerted Pella Corporation at company headquarters in Pella, Iowa, of the urgency for quality windows for rebuilding. The Pella team worked together to expedite the new Pella Designer Series windows with blinds between the panes of glass for the co-op rebuilding project.
- Vinyl Windows Can Be Good Choice

- Dear Jim: We are getting older and want to replace our wood windows with maintenance-free vinyl ones which are easy to clean. Dear Jan: If you want replacement windows that are virtually maintenance-free, then ones with vinyl frames are an excellent choice. With the new durable weatherstripping used today, the only maintenance should be cleaning the glass panes and wiping down the vinyl frame occasionally.
