Good daylighting strategies--the use of natural light to brighten up a home's interior--are increasingly in demand, especially for builders who work in urban and suburban neighborhoods where trees and nearby buildings often obstruct sunlight. Daylighting also is fundamental to green building: By limiting the need to turn on lights during the day, a well-designed, daylit building is estimated to reduce lighting energy consumption by 50 percent to 80 percent, according to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

Products that improve natural lighting definitely piqued reader interest this year: A translucent, insulated wall panel (No. 50) and three multi-panel glass door systems (Nos. 12, 74, 75) show up on the Top 100 list. In addition, the ODL remote-controlled Solar-Powered Dimmer (No. 86) helps homeowners control daylighting from tubular skylights and Andersen's 100 Series windows (No. 54) feature special glazing to prevent unwanted heat gain.

Technology also continues to weave its way into windows and doors with innovations that address convenience, security, and energy efficiency. Case in point is No. 52, the Schlage LiNK wireless-controlled door lock system that allows homeowners to control whole-house automation via the Internet. --Jennifer Goodman

#12 Weather Shield. The company's pocket door system allows for an opening up to 10 panels wide; when open, the panels store in a wall cavity. The doors can be configured in lineal, bi-parting, or 90-degree applications, and in heights ranging from 6 feet 8 inches to 10 feet. A patented interlocking mechanism couples panels together, and stainless steel rollers glide panels along rails. A motorized option is available. 800-477-6808. www.weathershield.com.

#50 Duo-Gard. Translucent illumaWALL is made of polycarbonate or resin art panels that transmit diffused natural light. At night, integral LEDs can be programmed to change colors. The double-glazed walls filled with Nanogel Aerogel (optional) achieve R-10 with high light transmission. 800-872-4404. www.duo-gard.com.

#78 Dome'l. Designed for balconies and terraces in windy cities, the Dominator door combines heavy-gauge extruded aluminum construction with a multipoint locking mechanism to create a barrier against noise, rain, and high winds, the maker says. The doors can withstand a pressure of 135 psf, the manufacturer adds, and feature anodized or custom-color finishes. Low-E coatings; argon gas fill; and reflective, tinted, and laminated glass options are available. 800-603-6635. www.domelinc.com.

#52 Schlage. LiNK is a wireless, Z-Wave-enabled door lock system that allows homeowners to control and monitor access to their home and home automation devices with a Web-enabled computer or mobile phone. The system plugs into an Ethernet port on the home computer's Internet router and will communicate with more than 200 additional Z-Wave-enabled home automation devices, including lights, IP cameras, and thermostats. 800-847-1864. www.schlage.com.

#86 ODL. The Solar-Powered Dimmer keeps tubular skylights from overheating a home's interior. Designed for 10-inch units, the device's onboard solar panel powers a remote-control shade during daylight hours and charges the four NiMH batteries that control nighttime shade adjustments. 866-635-4968. www.odl.com.

#54 Andersen Windows and Doors. 100 Series windows feature 43 percent pre-consumer recycled content. The windows are made from Fibrex, a structural composite of recycled sawdust and polymer, and are outfitted with SmartSun glazing that prevents unwanted heat gain. Four exterior colors are available. 800-426-4261. www.andersenwindows.com.

#75 NanaWall Systems. The VSW65 Single-Track Slider can be used for extra-large openings, with a virtually limitless number of panels each up to 4 feet wide and 9 feet 10 inches tall. The wood-framed panels glide easily on a low-profile track and disappear into a pocket when open to create a seamless transition from indoors to out. Closed panels lock end to end for an energy-efficient seal, says the firm, and hardware is concealed. 800-873-5673. www.nanawall.com.

#74 NanaWall Systems. The Segmented Curves vanishing glass wall system features Energy Star-rated glass, which balances solar gain and U-value, in an SL70 thermally broken aluminum-frame folding system. The wall system brings in more daylight than a flat wall while redefining the boundaries between indoors and out, the company says. 800-873-5673. www.nanawall.com.
