Pro Review: Schluter Ditra Mata User Review by Bob Bickford, Bickford Construction Corp., Williston, Vt.

The Ditra mat is a bond break thin set to plywood then thin set to tile. You may have had problems with separation from the underlayment causing cracks, but because of the geometry of the mat, the tile surface is protected from cracks coming through.

The mat adds an additional cost but it’s worth it to prevent cracks or problems in the future, such as wasting my time and money on repairs. I have used this product for six years and I have never gotten a call back about cracks or other repairs.

It does take a bit of training but once you know how to do it, it is an easy product to install.

    More About Schluter Ditra Mat

Designed for stone and tile applications, Schluter-Ditra is a polyethylene membrane with a grid structure of square cavities, each cut back in a dovetail configuration, and an anchoring fleece laminated to its underside. Schluter-DITRA is bonded to the substrate using thin-set mortar. The anchoring fleece on the underside is fully engaged in the mortar to provide a mechanical bond to the substrate.
