Bryant's Puron Refrigerant Gains Momentum In New MillenniumPuron To Replace R-22 By 2010

    INDIANAPOLIS, April. 25, 2005, With the discontinuation of products using R-22 refrigerant only 5 years away, Bryant Heating and Cooling Systems, one of the HVAC/R industry's leaders in home comfort solutions, is taking the lead on educating its dealers and their consumers about its Puron® products, which serve as an environmentally sound replacement for R-22.

    In 1987, the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer revealed that R-22 refrigerant was harmful to the environment. Following this finding, in 1990, the U.S. Legislature passed the Clean Air Act, which required all heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) manufacturers to discontinue production of products using the R-22 refrigerant by 2010. The only exception made for the production of R-22 was for replacement use in existing units.

    In the 8 years since Bryant introduced its Puron Refrigerant products, installations have grown from 5,000 units to over 300,000 units. This number is expected to grow as the 2010 date approaches.

    "When we found that R-22 was harmful to the environment we immediately assigned our research and development folks the task of finding an environmentally sound replacement for R-22 that could be used with all of our future heating ventilation and air conditioning products," said John Gibbons, vice president of national accounts.
