Spring is a time for home improvement, to finally do all those things that you promised you were going to fix just as soon as the weather broke.

Nationally, one of the most popular home improvements is the upgrading of the kitchen -- especially countertops. For a long time, ceramic tile and laminates were the choices. Then the solid-surface countertops, marble and granite began to make appearances in homes.

"We have a very innovative product," said Jason Grothjan who, along with Jacob Dabbelt, runs the Granite Transformations/ Rocksolid Granite franchise in Kettering.

"Our product falls in the engineered-stone category," he continued. "It is 95 percent real granite and has a five percent polymer added to bind it together."

Installation also is very different from the traditional tear- out-the-old-countertops.

"We take quarter-inch sheets of this material and we put it over your existing countertop which saves you mess and demolition -- and (installation) can typically be done in a quicker time period," he explained.

Grothjan said that 40 different colors are available and the material is heat- and stainresistant. Ordering averages four to six weeks and he said the price hovers around that of a premium solid- surface countertop.
