    ASTM's standard E2112, "Standard Practice for Installation of Exterior Windows, Doors, and Skylights," addresses the integration of windows, doors, flashing, skylights, anchors, shims, sealants and building wraps, and the general interface between walls and openings. E2112 calls for minimum 9" wide flashings at fenestrations and also requires flanged window and door units to be set into a continuous bead of sealant.

    According to JackJohn Hopkins, presidentCEO/Owner, Protecto Wrap recognizes that this standard will be held to greater scrutiny in the near future. The Colorado manufacturer is poised to offer the ultimate solution in their BT25XL adhesive sealing tape. "With the new custom serration, it is now easier for builders to peel and stick the tape, lift the flap, and peel and stick the second piece," says Hopkins. "This allows builders to easily flash a window or door and come back to install the housewrap, ensuring a tight seal."

    The newly serrated BT25XL tape includes a built-in serration at the 4" mark. When sealing the bottom sill of a window, installers can peel and stick the 4" portion of the tape so that it covers the sill, as well as the exterior substrate material. This helps prevent water intrusion, offering the ultimate in water damage protection. With the bottom 5" of the BT25XL tape still hanging off the sill (and not adhered yet), installers can tuck their housewrap underneath and then finally seal the remaining tape to the wall. While users should follow Protecto Wrap's instructions for putting in BT25XL, they should also always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the installation of the window or door.

    BT25XL is a tough-faced, superior, self-adhering air/vapor barrier and waterproofing membrane for vertical and horizontal above grade substrates. It seals window perimeters to building substrates to create an impenetrable barrier that stops air leakage, reducing heating and air conditioning costs to the homeowner.

    In addition to being a superior sealing tape that can be installed and left exposed for 180 days without any UV degradation, BT20XL is also the only flashing tape to pass hurricane level wind-driven rain test ASTM E331-90. BT25XL is 25-mil polyethylene-backed, aggressive rubberized adhesive membrane that is installed in a simple peel-and-stick fashion. Just center the tape over the area to be sealed and firmly roll the BT25XL against the surface. BT25XL seals itself around nails, screws, and staples. BT25XL can be applied to vinyl, plywood, OSB, concrete, metal, aluminum, polyethylene, building wrap products, and block and masonry surfaces, and it suitable for sealing the following applications:

    • Window and door perimeters to the building substrate
    • Joints in stucco insulation systems
    • Sheet rock joints in roof assemblies
    • Beneath metal cap flashings
    • Full building coverage as an air/vapor barrier
    • Sealing joints on gypsum sheathing in cavity wall construction
    • Other areas where a water or air seal is required
