    HARDSCAPING MADE EASY

Before beginning any hardscaping project, try to anticipate how it will fit into your long-range plans for the rest of your landscape.

Plan for proper drainage, even if you're only building a patio or deck. To make the most of the rain, plan runoff so it's captured and used on site. Develop a focal point and a path you want the eye to travel in the landscape.

Don't drop large elements, like stones, down and expect them to fit in. As much as possible, try to include curves and natural transitions from one element to the next.

    ANTIQUE DETECTIVE

    Hold still, this might hurt

Mid-19th century portraits, once widely ignored by collectors, have rapidly increased in value, Antique Detective Anne Gilbert writes.

    IN THE KITCHEN

You don't need three gallons of milk

Just as you wouldn't overfill your washing machine (you don't, do you?), you also should not overfill the refrigerator and freezer. Doing so restricts proper air flow and prevents the appliances from functioning efficiently.

    YOUR PLACE

And now, a Cliff Clavin-type moment

The word window is derived from an old Norse word for wind, "vindr," combined with "auga," meaning eye, resulting in the word vindauga. Literally translated, window means the eye of the house through which wind enters. Now aren't you glad you learned that?
