Editor's Perspective: Embracing the Challenge
- Source: BUILDING PRODUCTS Magazine
- Publication date: 2007-09-07
OK, I admit it. I'm a technophobe. That's mainly because I'm over the age of 40 and because my husband is a computer systems manager so I call on him for all my technological needs.
But I'm probably no different than a lot of you. The man who remodeled my house, for example, has a stellar reputation and jobs booked through late 2008. But this smart, successful 50-year-old business owner couldn't figure out how to send ane-mail message to "reply all," which irritated my husband, who never got copied on important messages.
It's not that you and I aren't interested in technology, but who has the time to figure all this stuff out? Nevertheless, when I was asked to provide editorial direction for not one, but two Web sites, I quickly embraced the challenge. I know that I'd better get on the bandwagon or the wagon is going to leave without me.

I think it's imperative that you get on the technology bandwagon, too. Young home buyers are very comfortable with high-tech gadgets and may know more about some products than you do because they surf the Web with ease and frequency. And homeowners about to embark on major remodeling projects are armed with more Web-based information than the Library of Congress. All these clients want technology that makes their lives easier, and they are willing to pay for upgrades.
This issue is devoted to technologies for you and your clients. The centerpiece of the issue is the Vanguard Best of the Web Award winners, 14 manufacturer Web sites that can help you quickly and easily find information. The first annual Vanguard winners will wow you with their stunning designs, thorough product information, dedicated sections for building pros, and clever animation.
These sites display content without clutter and feature creativity that creates no extra work for the viewer. They're easy to navigate, are understandable at a glance, and include technical information about product specs and installation that is clear enough to save a building pro from having to call for help.
In this issue you'll also find stories about the latest management software, high-tech ovens, lighting control packages, energy-efficient glazings, sophisticated outdoor home entertainment systems, and much more.
In 1998, Building Products was one of the first industry publications—and the first in the Hanley Wood family of magazines—to include manufacturers' Web addresses in stories. I'm equally pleased that this magazine continues to be devoted to giving you the information you need to stay on the cutting edge of technology.
