Building Products Presents the 2008 MVP AwardsPart 2

Each year, our panel of expert judges from the building industry singles out an elite group of new products worthy of special recognition. This year, 21 products—ranging from a high-efficiency furnace to a luxurious shower panel—were chosen as winners of Building Products' Most Valuable Product Awards. The selections provide some unique ideas that could make your job easier, your work more efficient, and your business more profitable. They might even add a little fun to your workday.

Building Products asked manufacturers to submit products introduced between January 2007 and January 2008. Unable to independently test each product, our judges scrutinized written statements, press materials, brochures, pricing information, testimonials, and photography submitted by the manufacturers. Specifically, our panel assessed each entry based on a single requirement: Is the product of "value" to pros? In other words, does it reduce installation time, callbacks, or labor costs; solve a problem; simplify installation; boost profits; or add curb appeal or a "wow" factor to a home?

All claims about the winning products come from their makers; the editors and judges could not independently verify the statements. What's more, the winners represent only a small portion of outstanding products that were introduced during the past year. The judges made their selections based on items entered in the competition, not from all products that debuted between January 2007 and January 2008.

Without further delay, we present this year's MVP winners.

Creative Specialties International

Creative Specialties International. The Mirrorscapes line of mirror frames offers nearly idiot-proof installation, the company claims, noting that a contractor can put up a 4-foot-by-6-foot frame in less than 15 minutes. No angled miter cuts are needed, rough edges and cutting errors can be covered up with decorative corner frame pieces, and templates make it easy to align adhesive mounting brackets. Five styles plus both metallic and wood finishes allow for a range of looks. "The product adds a custom look to an 'ordinary' bath," a judge said. Trane

Trane. With ever-increasing energy prices, a more efficient furnace is a no-brainer. The Energy Star-qualified XV95 has a 96.7 percent AFUE rating, among the highest in the industry, the company says. "The very high efficiency is a plus, since gas prices are so high," noted a judge. It comes in four upflow and four downflow models, both compatible with air cleaners and humidifiers. The variable-speed blower motor operates at more efficient speeds and more quietly than conventional motors. Insulated cabinets and blower doors reduce noise and save energy. Benjamin Obdyke

Benjamin Obdyke. Mold is the kind of problem for which an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Mortairvent, a mortar deflection and ventilation system, is designed to drain water away from behind manufactured stone, stucco, EIFS, and brick exterior walls. The two-ply product creates a ventilation cavity between the vapor barrier and the exterior wall and also provides a water-resistant barrier. It speeds up the drying process through convection. "It seems like a viable solution to a very real problem," one judge said. Each roll covers about 200 square feet. The core material is polypropylene. Henkel

Henkel. Almost as exciting and productive as watching paint dry is waiting for caulk to dry for 24 hours. For busy builders and remodelers who have better things to do, Polyseamseal EST Speed Seal carves that waiting period down to two hours. "It will save time," a judge said. The silicone caulk, appropriate for kitchen and bath applications, creates a flexible, watertight seal and resists mold and mildew. It comes in white and clear. VT Industries

VT Industries. The Geneva postformed laminate countertop provides the look and feel of granite, natural stone, or solid surfacing while offering the potential of meeting green building program standards. The EQcountertop option with the Geneva profile—a modern drop ogee—is manufactured using Greenguard-certified laminates, water-based polyvinyl acetate glue, and recycled particleboard. Geneva also comes in standard and premium laminate finishes and a wide range of colors. The countertops are available with or without backsplashes. L.E. Johnson Products

L.E. Johnson Products. Allowing sliding doors to be installed on interior walls, 200WM wall-mount door hardware offers an option when floor space is too limited for a swing door and pipes and wiring make pocket doors impractical. The system "offers a good alternative if space is of concern," a judge commented. The hardware holds doors weighing as much as 300 pounds and can be used with doors of any height and a thickness of at least 11/8 inches in single-door openings up to 96 inches wide and converging door openings up to 192 inches wide. Broan-NuTone

Broan-NuTone. Designed for homeowners who care about energy efficiency and long-term savings, QDE range hoods are Energy Star-qualified and offer lifetime energy savings of 564 kilowatt hours compared with standard models, the manufacturer calculates. An undercabinet design and an adapter cut installation time. The 30-inch-wide range hoods come in white, black, and stainless steel and work for ducted applications only. They include two compact fluorescent bulbs and can be converted for either vertical or horizontal discharge. Cost: $549. 800-558-1711. www.broan.com.

Hilti

Hilti. With a 36-volt, 3.3-amp-hour lithium-ion battery, the WSC 7.25-A is the highest-capacity cordless circular saw on the market, the maker claims. "Circ saws have heretofore been the problematic stepchild of the cordless tool world," a judge noted. With a cutting depth of 25/8 inches—which the manufacturer says is the deepest on the market—the saw can rip sheets of wood and composite materials along with cutting forming boards and making bevel and miter cuts. A viewing window permits the user to clearly see the cutting line. The tool includes onboard Allen wrench storage. A charger and tool bag also are included. Eldorado Stone

Eldorado Stone. "In the world of manufactured stone, which is inherently cost-saving and a labor solution, there are few 'new' looks. I have not previously seen this unique look in an engineered stone," a judge commented on the CoastalReef line of manufactured stone, which is designed to emulate coral. "Our masons told me it was easier to work with than natural stone," said Candy Dormizzi of Newport Beach, Calif.-based William Lyon Homes in a written testimonial. The product has a smooth finish and comes in two shades of off-white. Dimensions are 4 to 12 inches by 4 to 16 inches by 11/4 inches. Whirlpool

Whirlpool. The Duet Steam washer and dryer tackle the everyday problem of stained, wrinkled clothes­—while trimming homeowners' water and energy bills. The washer dispenses steam to work on stains after water and detergent do their job. Cycle options include a "Sanitary" mode that has been certified by the National Sanitation Foundation as sanitizing without bleach. In the dryer, a mist of water combines with the heat to create steam to ease wrinkles and remove odors—a first in the industry, the company says. The Energy Star-qualified washer can save up to 73 percent of water and 77 percent of energy compared with pre-2004 washers, the company says. Custom Building Products

Custom Building Products. If traditional fiber-cement backerboard went on a diet, it might become EasyBoard. One sheet of fiber-cement backerboard can weigh as much as 45 pounds; a sheet of EasyBoard weighs 6 pounds, making it easier to transport and carry. The product is manufactured using a polyiso foam instead of concrete or gypsum, and still offers dimensional stability, mold resistance, and resistance to water, the firm says. The sheets cut with a utility knife, creating no dust. "There was none of the usual cement dust, so cleanup was a breeze," said James Eaton of Atlanta-based Eaton Tile in a written testimonial. Arch Treatment Technologies

Arch Treatment Technologies. While many consumers like the concept of green building, they don't necessarily want the wood for their decks to be tinted green by preservatives. Wolmanized L3 wood retains its natural color after treatment. In addition, the preservative includes no copper, making the wood easier on saw blades, the company reports. A water repellent helps the wood stay straighter longer than unprotected wood. One judge praised the "solving [of] some of the problems inherent with CCA-treated wood, at a competitive price point." The wood is appropriate only for out-of-ground use, such as deck platforms and railings, door and window molding and trim, and beams and joists.
