Custom Shower Systems Make Luxurious Bathing a Vertical ExperienceSuper Soakers
- By Jeffrey Lee

Mayabb says the future is in digital valves, which allow homeowners to dial up their desired water temperature just like a thermostat. Some even include sequencers that allow the user to pre-program a desired shower sequence for a "body car wash" effect.
The price on those valves is still unrealistic for many at an estimated $6,500 for materials alone, he says, but as with other custom shower parts, the price should drop as they become more popular. "The more people that buy the stuff, the cheaper it's going to get," he says. -- BUILDING PRODUCTS
Shower Bliss
The idea of turning the bathroom into a spa experience has been around for years, but both builders and shower manufacturers are taking it to another level by building in features that would normally be found only in an actual spa.
Jerry Effren, principal of Greyrock Cos., a residential developer in Norwalk, Conn., recalls one master bath he built with a BainUltra tub, a steam shower, and a massage room with massage table and specialized lighting. "People are stressed, and they want to unwind," he explains.
The same principle applies to new multi-sensory shower systems such as the DTV II from Kohler and the Temazkal from BainUltra. Kohler's Michael Wandschneider says the idea behind the DTV was to simplify water delivery while enhancing the shower experience with steam or music. The system allows homeowners to personalize the shower settings with hydrotherapy—pulsing body sprays in different patterns, steam settings, mood lighting, and music. "It is whole bathroom environment integration," he says.
