THE DEAL
Every shoe is separate from its match. Sweaters and swimsuits occupy the same space, and getting dressed takes much longer than it should. The closet is a mess. What should you do?
THE SOLUTION
Here are some hints to get your closet in tip-top shape in no time: Take stock. First, determine what you have. If you get rid of worn-out or ill-fitting clothing, you'll have more room to organize and more room for new stuff. Divide everything into three piles: things you wear or use often, things you wear occasionally but that still fit and things you can get rid of or donate.
Sort everything. Group clothes by season, by color and by use. Fold off-season clothes or hang them toward the back of the closet so the things you need every day are more accessible. Organize by color so you can quickly find the white shirt you need. Things you wear often, like a favorite pair of jeans, should be together within arm's reach.
Use storage. Storing shoes or folded items in clear plastic drawers -- available at many stores like Target and Bed Bath & Beyond -- will keep things in order while allowing you to see what's inside. Cloth shelves that hang from the closet rod keep folded sweaters from toppling over.
Maximize your space. Add a double rod that hangs from the higher bar. You'll double your space to store shorter items, no power tools necessary. Utilize extra space with an over-the-door shoe organizer, which keeps the floor of the closet available for boxes or baskets
Take care of your clothes. Before putting dry-cleaned items away, remove the plastic dry-cleaner bags. They trap excess moisture and could cause mold or mildew to grow. The chemicals in the bags age fabrics and can eventually cause clothes to yellow. Also, cedar products like hangers, blocks or boxes will keep moths away. Gently scratch the cedar's surface with sandpaper to make sure the scent does its job to protect your clothes.
