In a 14-inch-deep beam, you can drill holes up to 4 5/8 inches wide. This "helps eliminate guesswork and time lost waiting for an answer from the engineer," one judge said. The number of holes you can drill is determined by the length of the beam and the size of the holes. The beam comes in widths of 1 3/4 inches and 3 1/2 inches, with depths from 9 1/4 inches to 16 inches. Cost: $20 to $30 per cubic foot. 888-453-8358. More
